The use of of individuals that are so called what Americans "sexy" in advertising is definitely a controversial topic. It seems about every other commercial or ad plays the sex card on having attractive females or males try to sell their product. Most of the time the products are not even that good of products but the advertisement is there to be controversial so people remember the ad when they are thinking of buying something. A good example of this is Hardee's and their use of models like Kate Upton and Kathryn Webb. They show these models eating the burger and acting all promiscuous but since when is a burger supposed to be sexy? It just gets kind of old, the sex appeal just really has lost its impact. I find ads refreshing that utilize real people not actors that show the products actual benefit. I know that is not as good to look at as a model but I feel it appeals more to the regular person. I do not just buy things based off what dudes who are "good-looking" buy, I buy things I like and are a benefit to me. It just seems that almost every week you hear stories of sexual ads that offended people but that may have been the target. The ad gets on news outlets and makes the rounds which allows people to see it and remember it. Our issue as Americans as we glorify these advertisements, and the actors who portray this fake image of what the ad is showing.
Most ads show a fake reality that most of us will never see and that is another controversy that comes with advertising, you have to watch each with a grain of salt. Most alcohol commercials play on this fake reality. Well that fake reality can be dangerous where people take drinking too far and get themselves hurt. I think people just need to be smart enough to know exactly when the fake reality is just not attainable.
I agree that advertisers play on people's emotions by selling sex, and the issue is controversial. These ads are frequently misleading and don't actually show the benefit of the product (will I have a six pack by scarfing down burgers?).
